Ochlerotatus
fitchii
Ochlerotatus fitchii
is the largest biting mosquito commonly
encountered in Teton County. This species is
widely distributed thoughout the county, and its
larvae maybe found in a variety of habitats from
small, wooded pools to larger, open marshes.
This species is typically limited to one
generation per year, but because of its
longevity and wide distribution, it may be
encountered throughout most of the summer
season. Females are aggressive biters and may
become a local nuisance when nearby larval
habitat is abundant. Image from Carpenter &
LaCasse, 1955.
