Culiseta inornata

Culiseta inornata is common in all parts of Teton County.  It overwinters as an adult mosquito and breeds in permanent water including marshes, swamps, and less frequently in containers such as horse troughs.  It is the largest mosquito commonly encountered in this area but it does not bit humans.  Its preferred hosts include large mammals such as cattle, horses, moose and elk.  Image from Carpenter & LaCasse, 1955.
